Week of 2/24-3/1
Welcome to the first Local Sports recap, brought to you by Carson Olson.
Streaks Girl’s Basketball traveled to Ottawa for their Sectional Semifinal game against Washington, after their impressive Regional Championship win against Dunlap. Streaks trailed early and took a 19-point deficit into the locker room at halftime. Streaks came out hot and ended up taking the lead down to 4, before eventually falling 55-47. Freshman Zaniyah Carter was the leading scorer for the Streaks with 14 points.
Later in the week, Ella Herchenroder was named to the WB6 All-Conference 1st Team, with Jozalyn Kilgore being named to the 2nd Team. Ryleigh Clark, Cora Johnson, Annabelle Giles, Josslyn Peck, Jayla Connour(mgr.), and Valencia Davis(mgr.) made Academic All-Conference. The Girls finished the season 24-8, and 2nd in the Western Big 6, what a great year for first-year head coach Lexi Demott. Congratulations Girls!
Boys' Basketball ended their season with a Regional Semifinal game against Morton. Morton took the lead early and kept it throughout the entire game, eventually losing 63-24. Streaks leading scorer was Jaxon Wyatt with 6 points. Streaks finished the season 11-22.
Galesburg’s wrestling teams have had great success over the years and this year was no different. Boys Wrestling had 3 State Qualifiers in Josiah Carter (Sr.), Anthony Makwala (Jr.) and Larry Randolph Jr (Sr.). Carter finished his state meet 0-2, whilst Randolph Jr. and Makwala finished 1-2. Josiah will be wrestling and running track at Saint Ambrose next year. Good Luck and Great Season to our wrestlers!
Streaks Girl’s wrestling program is fairly new, and for a second year in a row, has fielded a qualifier at the IHSA State Meet. Eliana Juarez (Sr.) finished her high school wrestling career at the State Meet, finishing 2-2. Way to go Eliana!
Galesburg Swim and Dive finished their season at the IHSA State Meet for the third straight year. Streaks had 8 qualifiers in 7 events, Chace Parcel (Jr.), Carson Olson (Sr.), Nathan Nelson (Sr.), Ryan Tapper (Sr.), Anders Bergren, (Sr.) Jackson Warren (Jr.), Travis Henry (Sr.), and Brayden McGuire (Fr.). Carson Olson qualified for finals in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly, finishing 9th and 14th, with school records in the respective events. This was the conclusion of Coach Ray and Coach Tami’s career with the Streaks Swim Team. The boys were Team Conference and Sectional Champs for the 3rd straight year, and finished 9-0 for the 4th straight year. Congratulations Ray, Tami, and the rest of the team.
